Education Services Helping refugees and immigrants learn English and move towards self-sufficiency
The World Relief Education Program DuPage/Aurora serves approximately 900 immigrants and refugees from over 60 different countries.
World Relief's Community ESL Program provides 25 day and evening classes with an annual enrollment of over 900 students from over 60 countries. Classes are held in local churches in Wheaton, Aurora, West Chicago, and Warrenville. The program goal is to give our adult learners the language skills they need to become independent and productive members of their community. Our church partners play a key role in this program, having opened their doors to provide instructional sites to help over 5000 immigrants and refugees since 1982.
-
Specializied Curriculum is designed to meet the "real-life" needs of our adult learners. The majority of our ESL students have minimal English skills when they enroll. We prepare them to function independently and give them the skills to find and keep a job. -
Flexible Scheduling accommodates a variety of work schedules and work times. Morning, afternoon, and evening classes are available. Students may register and enter classes any time during the year. -
Transportation is available, free of charge, to 80 refugees who attend the day classes and live in the Wheaton/Carol Stream area. Bus tickets are provided to newly arrived refugees in Aurora. -
Job Focused ESL and Job Preparation classes are available for adults on public assistance who will be entering the workforce. -
Literacy Classes are provided especially for those adult learners arriving without literacy skills in their native language. -
Volunteers provide small group and one-on-one tutoring, in and outside the classroom. More than 150 volunteers participate each year.
World Relief's ESL Children's Programs include nursery services, 2 year-old toddler classes, ESL pre-school, and a family literacy program for the children of parents attending the day classes.
-
Nursery services and toddler classes are offered to allow parents to attend the morning ESL program -
Pre-school prepares children to integrate into the public school system. Over 200 children, infants through six years old, participate in this program each year. -
The family literacy program encourages families to read together and introduces them to the library. It helps parents be more actively involved in their children's education and helps children be more successful when they start kindergarten.
The World Relief Education Program also offers Workplace ESL instruction to employees at local companies.
