Growing Hope

A majority of people in the developing world provide for themselves and their families through subsistence agriculture.  They grow corn or they raise cattle, living day to day and depending on traditional farming practices and favorable weather for a decent crop.

Many sell their goods in the local markets, enabling them to buy other food and necessary supplies.  The ability to plan for the future, to protect themselves against unexpected expenses or to increase their income over time simply does not exist.  Drought, flooding, a bad storm, or a sick animal has the potential to devastate the entire family.

World Relief comes alongside farmers, offering sustainable farming solutions.  Teaching innovative and cost-effective agricultural methods, World Relief technicians teach farmers in Latin America and Africa about crop rotation and irrigation, and then they introduce them to national and international markets. 

At World Relief's demonstration farms, groups of farmers learn new crop-growing methods. “Some farmers say ‘That's impossible on my land," says World Relief's Nestor Rodriguez Rivera, “But another farmer will say, ‘Look at my land – it is possible.”

Farmers come together in cooperatives, joining to compete in global markets, share better farming techniques and resources.  As the agricultural sector grows, families eat better, their children are more likely to attend school, and the national economy begins to improve.  World Relief transforms communities, coming alongside farmers and offering them tools for success.
