Flooding in Central America   Nicaragua Title
Completed

Disaster Description:
In this past month – for 11 consecutive days – torrential rains across Central America and Nicaragua triggered sweeping floods and massive landslides, which washed out roads, isolated villages and devastated homes, schools, health centers and crops. The United Nations estimates that thousands have been affected. Rain from two low pressure systems, one from the Pacific Ocean and the other from the Caribbean, brought record-breaking rainfall to some areas that are now facing a total loss of livelihoods. In Nicaragua over 10,000 people are now forced to seek emergency shelter, many of them already classified as “extremely vulnerable”. To reduce their further vulnerability to hunger and disease, a timely response is needed now.

The Response
World Relief Nicaragua (WRN) is focusing its emergency response in the severely-affected rural communities in the Esteli region of Nicaragua, where the Rio Grande of Esteli and Pire River overflowed their banks leaving thousands with flooded homes and lost crops. Working with a local partner, WRN will reach hundreds of families with hygiene kits, sanitation trainings and emergency food items to meet with immediate needs for nutrition and stave off water borne diseases. These basic essentials are the first and crucial step as communities begin to recover and rebuild after these devastating floods.
