Disaster Response

A Story of Christian Compassion

World Relief responds directly to the world’s most complex humanitarian crises.

Darfur, Sudan

World Relief’s response focuses on the communities of Um Tagouk, Azirni and Sanidadi in war-torn West Darfur:

In 2008, World Relief’s feeding centers provided nourishing food – plumpynut and corn soya blend – to thousands of vulnerable children under 5 and their mothers.
Two health clinics supported by World Relief in Um Tagouk and Sanidadi provided essential medical services for thousands of people; a World Relief doctor and public health expert provided training to local staff. A gravity fed water system was installed in Um Tagouk, providing safe drinking water for the community. World Relief distributed 35 tons of seeds to farming households in the three communities, enabling local people to grow crops to increase their food security.

Southern Sudan

Southern Sudan is recovering from years of civil war that devastated local health and educational infrastructures and resulted in one of the world’s highest child mortality rates.

In 2008, 275,000 people benefited from World Relief’s primary health care network. Community health interventions included maternal and child health services, vaccinations, distribution of bed nets to prevent malaria, and community health training and education. World Relief trained 687 primary and early childhood school teachers, 111 head teachers and 38 government officials.

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

In one of the most volatile regions on earth, World Relief responded to communities torn apart by conflict.

Emergency food and relief kits were distributed to 3,000 uprooted families.
Six schools were reconstructed in war-torn North Kivu Province, enabling students to return to classes.
Resettlement kits containing seeds and tools were distributed to families uprooted by the conflict, providing the means to plant crops as they returned to their homes. World Relief brought together church leaders to promote peace and reconciliation across tribal lines. Through a network of local churches, World Relief launched income generating projects, such as providing sewing machines and training to vulnerable women.
