A Day in the Life
Haiti

When the noise of your neighbor’s stray dogs and life in general wakes you up in the early morning, the temperature is already in the low 80’s and you are drenched with sweat. You have never owned a home or lived in an apartment; in fact you probably have never even held a formal job. Quite often you have stolen just to have something for you and your children to eat.

Your religion is a mixture of Roman Catholicism, voodoo and spiritism. Maybe today you will visit the new mission that has opened up in your area and see if you can get some food and clothing and maybe even your first Bible.

To experience a small part of life in Haiti, follow some or all of the suggestions listed below:

  • Do a “media fast” for the day—no TV, radio, video games etc.
  • Carry in all the water you need to cook and drink for the day from an outside faucet. Don’t forget to boil all drinking water!
  • Fix rice and beans for a mid-day meal. You may also add a little boiled chicken or goat meat if you are so fortunate.
  • Skip dinner or have only white rice and a boiled vegetable.
  • In the evening use only a single candle to light the room. (Most Haitians do not have electricity or running water)
  • Read Ephesians 6:11-18 together as a family and pray for the spiritual protection of Christians and church leaders in Haiti

Consider…
Haiti is a country of two classes; the urban elite and the rural poor.
The poorest of people are responding to the Gospel at a much higher rate
than the well-off. Why do you think this is? Could it be that material
possessions are actually a hindrance to spiritual growth?
