Where We WorkWhere We Work

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has suffered a long history of conflict.  With over four million deaths in the last eight years caused directly or indirectly by conflict, the DRC continues to lose 1,200 people every single day—half of them children.
Rich in natural resources, the Congo lacks the infrastructure and knowledge to develop its economy.  The spread of HIV and continuing conflict between over 450 tribal groups provide significant barriers to development.

Reconciliation
World Relief comes alongside local churches encouraging reconciliation and rehabilitation in eastern Congo.  World Relief brings denominations and tribal groups together to rebuild homes and public buildings for over 8,000 families.

“Through the training sessions on leadership, reconciliation and conflict resolution people in the church are beginning to see the need to live in harmony…and this wouldn’t have been possible without the help and support of World Relief,” noted Gilbert Muhindo Bushi, a pastor in DRC.

AIDS Prevention and Care
The DRC already has well over a million people living with AIDS, and the number is rapidly growing.  Young people are reached with vital messages about HIV/AIDS prevention and care through programs in churches, schools and community clubs.  Knowledge breaks down stigma and encourages a compassionate response while equipping youth to make wise choices about the future.

Small Business Loans
Formal credit is largely unavailable to Congolese returning home. In fact, Hekima, World Relief’s microfinance organization, one of only a few international financial services.  Odette Bahigwa, who supports her family of 12, says, “I can now pay our house rent, pay school fees for seven of my school-aged children, buy food and clothing for my family. I know that things will get better.”  With nearly 3,000 clients, Hekima offers individuals and families opportunities to support themselves.
