Tonight, according to the World Food Program (WFP), one in seven people will go to bed hungry – more at risk of dying from hunger than AIDS, malaria or tuberculosis. Of the almost one billion people in the world who do not have enough to eat, a quarter live in Sub-Saharan Africa. And in the last 6 months, many communities in the vast, arid plains of Turkana in northern Kenya are facing crisis and emergency levels of hunger that threaten to their very existence.

On October 16 World Relief will be joining The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and hundreds of partnering organizations to recognize the 32nd annual ‘World Food Day.’ A worldwide call to fight hunger, end malnutrition and improve agriculture, World Food Day is a great opportunity for World Relief and our global network of friends and partners to remember our 1 billion brothers and sisters around the world suffering from hunger.

With specialized projects in agriculture, nutrition and food security, World Relief is committed to improving the food conditions for several hundred thousands of people. Tonight, hundreds of thousands are experiencing hunger in Turkana. The most vulnerable need immediate assistance with food and clean drinking water, and tomorrow education, sustainable agriculture and development programs will be crucial to empower the Turkana’s resilience to later droughts and food crises. World Relief and churches from around the world and Kenya are pledging to stand with the people of Turkana as they face the challenges of drought and hunger.
