Ask Congress to Pass the American Dream and Promise Act

Over the past several years, the U.S. government has allowed hundreds of thousands of individuals from countries that had experienced humanitarian crises to remain lawfully in the United States, promising protection while their countries of origin navigates active disasters – including Haitians, Venezuelans, Syrians, Ukrainians, Afghans and others who have fled natural disasters, war, humanitarian crises, and political violence. While these protections were meant to be temporary, the conditions in many of these countries of origin remain dire. However, in the past year, the administration has reversed our country’s offer of protection to more than 1 million individuals with Temporary Protected Status (TPS), revoking their work authorizations and abruptly rendering them unlawfully present and, thus, vulnerable to detention and deportation in some cases.

Another group of immigrants, often known as “Dreamers,” were brought to the United States as children but remain ineligible to apply for permanent legal status in most cases. Many of these individuals, also, have been allowed to live and work with a temporary legal protection known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), but their status also remains tenuous. The American Dream and Promise Act would allow certain individuals who have qualified for TPS or who are Dreamers to apply for permanent legal status in the U.S.
