Light for the Journey Advent Book

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

What if the story of Advent was not just about waiting for Christ, but about joining Him on the road — walking with the displaced, the overlooked, and the longing?

As the days grow shorter and the world settles into winter’s hush, Christians around the globe enter a season called Advent. For centuries, Advent has been a time of waiting, longing, and hope. It’s a time when we remember the ancient promises of God and look forward to the coming of Jesus, the Light of the World.

Yet for millions today, waiting and longing are not just spiritual exercises; they are daily realities. Displacement is at its zenith. Entire families are on the move — fleeing war, persecution, disaster and poverty. Each journey is unique, but the longing is the same. People are searching for safety, for a home, and for hope.

Light for the Journey is a free Advent book written for them, and for all who walk alongside them.

Advent is, at its core, a movement of love. It is the story of an intimate God who does not remain distant, but who steps into our world, engaging our struggles and our journeys. It is the story of a young family forced to leave home under threat. It’s a story that includes lowly shepherds — outcasts, yet essential contributors to society. Their story has them watching in the darkness, protecting someone else’s property. Our story includes astronomers traveling from distant lands, navigating stars and following a light they barely understood.

In the heartache of people longing for deliverance, Advent is a movemental love story — a true story of a purposefully displaced Savior who enters humanity’s exile to lead us home.

In Light for the Journey, we invite you to walk through the biblical story — a story that echoes in the lives of refugees and migrants today. As we move through each chapter, we will see how the themes of Advent — coming, light, darkness, Immanuel, shepherd, and advocate — speak powerfully to the realities of displacement and to God’s heart for the vulnerable.

The Purpose of This Book

This book is an invitation to see Advent through new eyes. Imagine you are hearing the story for the first time. Look through the lens of displacement, through the eyes of those who are waiting for belonging, for shelter and safety, for protection and a future. Discover how the ancient promises of God, spoken through the prophets and fulfilled in Jesus, are still being fulfilled today. Consider your own role in God’s unfolding story of movement, love and restoration.

Advent is like standing at the edge of a long road at dusk, watching the first star appear. The journey ahead is uncertain, but the promise of light draws us forward. For the displaced, and for all who wait in the shadows, Advent is a reminder that God’s story is still unfolding, and that hope is never out of reach.

A Journey Together

Each chapter of Light for the Journey explores a key Advent narrative, rooted in Scripture and connected to the lived experiences of displaced people around the world. We begin with the journey of Jesus’ family, echoing the journeys of refugees today. We move through the darkness of exile and the promise of light, the hope of God’s presence — Immanuel — then to the good news announced to shepherds on the margins, and finally to the call to advocacy and justice.

As you read this book, you will walk with the Holy Family as they journey from home to exile and back again. You will sit with shepherds in the darkness, waiting for good news. You will follow the light of a distant star, searching for hope. You will hear the call to be an advocate for those who have no voice. Through it all, you will discover that the story of Advent is not just about the past — it is about what God is doing now, in our world and in our lives.

Advent is a season of hope for the displaced, because it is the story of a God who moves toward us, who enters into our pain, and who leads us home. Whether you are reading this as someone who has been displaced, as someone who serves and welcomes the displaced, or as someone seeking to understand God’s heart for the vulnerable, we pray you will find in these pages the light and hope of Christ.

Let us journey together, trusting that the God who fulfilled His promises in Jesus will continue to fulfill them today — until every exile finds a home, every darkness is dispelled by light, and every longing heart is met by the love of Immanuel.
