Climbing Beyond Borders: A Day of Courage, Laughter, and Rock Walls

Twenty years ago, Julyanna and her family came to the U.S. seeking medical assistance for her sister. Coming from the northeastern coast of Brazil, they faced more than just a language barrier in their new life. Along with the mixed emotions of leaving behind their people, food, culture, and lifestyle, came the lingering feeling of “I don’t belong”—a weight that made daily life hard to carry.

Ten years into her new life, Julyanna and her now-husband had the opportunity to meet Tom Shadyac, an American film director, producer, and writer. Tom brought to them the opportunity to visit Colorado. As soon as Julyanna saw mountains for the first time; she fell in love instantly, so deeply that she never wanted to be far from them again.

New Climber

As a result of their growing friendship, Tom invited them on their first outdoor climbing trip and shared his dream of transforming what was once an expensive and exclusive sport, into an experience accessible to everyone; regardless of background, race, or age.

“The first time I was climbing I felt like “I belong”. Climbing is so much more than what we think. It’s a sport that it’s not about a competition, so we can all cheer for our teammates, support each other and promote teamwork. It helps the body, but also the mind to be in the present”.

Tom’s dream became a reality in March 2018 with the opening of Memphis Rox, a nonprofit climbing gym that feels like home. Its mission is: “To bring rehabilitation, healing, and a renewed sense of hope to challenged communities by providing a climbing facility and programs that foster relationships across cultural, racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds.”

Hands, Hearts, & Harnesses

Inspired not only by the idea of making everyone feel at home, but also by her deep heart for the immigrant community, Julyanna reached out to our youth department at World Relief Memphis through social media. Together, we connected her and her team with a group of nine refugee kids we serve, with the goal of giving them the same amazing experience she once had.

Julyanna and the Memphis Rox team ended up providing them with much more than just a fun experience outdoors, but a time of community, support, a time to explore new things, to get to know themselves better, a time where they felt seen; welcomed and able to remember they were kids again. Regardless of how hard life has been, and how complex their adjustment process to their new reality has been.

Vertical Victory

The day of the trip was truly special. Everyone was amazed by the kids’ willingness to participate, their excitement to try something completely new, their courage to climb without fear, and the great welcoming atmosphere of the trip, made it unforgettable for everyone involved.

Our youth had an amazing time rock climbing and provided them a fun way to connect with other youth, while challenging their own abilities. several of them couldn’t wait to share with their family and friends and were eager for me to share photos with them to do so.

Why is this important?

You don’t have to be an immigrant to support organizations like World Relief Memphis, you just need to have a heart willing to connect, to listen, and to be a welcoming face in the community. Especially in the current political climate, it’s our responsibility to bring joy and hope.
