Baltimore, Md. – World Relief is deeply grieved by the escalating humanitarian crisis unfolding in El Fasher, North Darfur, and urgently calls on all parties to the conflict to prioritize the safety and dignity of civilians and to uphold international humanitarian law, which requires protecting noncombatants from harm. Recent instances of violence this week have left citizens in El Fasher and surrounding areas in increased danger, and since Sunday, 35,000 have fled the city. World Relief urges combatants to allow access for desperately needed humanitarian aid.
In crisis since April 2023, the ongoing turbulence in the country has culminated in the displacement of over 12 million people and the loss of countless lives, many of whom are innocent women, children and men. A total of 30 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance.
“The need in El Fasher and surrounding areas is acute,” commented Ric Hamic, country director for World Relief Sudan. “We grieve the immense loss of life and urge a ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid to be administered. We will continue to work alongside local partners to alleviate the suffering of those affected by this crisis, as well as providing resources to the vulnerable throughout the nation.”
World Relief has served in Sudan since 2003, working alongside communities through decades of conflict and recovery. Today, the organization is providing lifesaving food assistance, healthcare, clean water, sanitation, and protection across Darfur. The team is mobilizing to extend support to areas where the needs are growing by the hour. Amid destruction and displacement, there remains a chance to preserve life and restore hope.
“The people of Sudan have our attention, and we lament over what is happening,” commented Myal Greene, president and CEO of World Relief. “We remain committed in this unprecedented time of violence and displacement to saving lives and alleviating suffering. We call on combatants to allow humanitarian assistance into these vulnerable regions.”
