World Relief Sacramento Recognized by Library of Congress for Literacy Program
Sacramento’s Afghan Women’s ESL Literacy and Integration Groups Program named a 2026 Successful Practices Honoree
SACRAMENTO, Calif. | September 9, 2026 | World Relief Sacramento has been recognized by the Library of Congress Literacy Awards Program as a 2026 Successful Practices Honoree for its Afghan Women’s ESL Literacy and Integration Groups Program.
The honor includes a $10,000 award and recognizes World Relief Sacramento among 12 organizations demonstrating successful and replicable practices in literacy programming.
The Afghan Women’s ESL Literacy and Integration Groups Program offers an innovative approach designed specifically to create supportive learning spaces for Afghan women who have had little or no previous opportunity for formal education. This one-of-a-kind program helps address a significant gap in the greater Sacramento region by providing accessible online literacy instruction for women who may be unable to attend traditional in-person classes and who are beginning their education without foundational literacy skills.
The program’s virtual model helps remove barriers such as transportation and childcare by bringing education directly into women’s homes. Its specialized teaching approach is designed for non-literate and pre-literate learners who might otherwise struggle in traditional beginning ESL classes. Participants build foundational reading, writing, numeracy, English and technology skills in a supportive environment where they can experience success, grow in confidence and prepare for the next steps in their learning.
For many participants, learning English is about much more than language. Becoming literate can open doors to greater independence, help parents navigate schools and healthcare, strengthen employment opportunities, and create a deeper sense of belonging in a new community. The program combines literacy instruction with integration classes conducted in Dari and Pashto, where Afghan caseworkers serve as trusted guides, helping participants understand the systems and resources they encounter as newcomers in the United States. Participants leave the program with practical skills and a strong foundation for continued learning, independence, and community engagement.

Culturally relevant learning materials help Afghan women build foundational literacy skills in a way that feels accessible, familiar, and engaging.

More than learning English, the Afghan Women’s ESL Literacy and Integration Groups create spaces for connection, confidence, and belonging.
One participant shared how the program transformed her daily life:
“Before this program, I felt invisible. Now I see myself. I can read letters, recognize street signs, and help my family in ways I never could before. I am proud of what I can do.”
Her experience reflects a common theme among participants: gaining the skills and self-assurance needed to navigate daily life more independently and support their families.
The Library of Congress announced the 2026 Literacy Awards on International Literacy Day, recognizing 21 organizations in the United States and around the world for innovative approaches to expanding literacy and promoting reading. The Literacy Awards Program has recognized outstanding literacy efforts since 2013.
World Relief Sacramento is grateful to the Library of Congress for recognizing programs that respond to the unique strengths and circumstances of learners. The award will help expand innovative, accessible learning opportunities that empower refugees and other immigrants to build skills, navigate daily life and thrive in their new communities.
