For 18 years, Boran lived as an urban refugee in Thailand. Life there was difficult — in Thailand, refugees like Boran had no freedom or rights. Work was difficult to find. And with his father experiencing illness and being bedbound for several years, life was even more difficult for Boran.
After his father applied for refugee status through the UNHCR and was rejected, Boran tried as well — and was approved in 2013. He learned that he would have to move to a third country, but because of his father’s sickness, Boran was unwilling to move. Instead, he applied for refugee status for the whole family, which was eventually approved. Still, Boran’s family waited for seven years before they were approved to resettle in the U.S. in 2023. He felt like he had a new life.
Boran and his family arrived in the U.S. in 2023, welcomed by World Relief. “When we arrived, they took care of everything.” Now, Boran takes care of his father, who was able to get special medical care after arriving in the U.S. In the future, Boran hopes to study, find new work and volunteer to help other Cambodian refugees fleeing their country.
