Victor’s Journey to a New Beginning

For Victor Ruiz, those words carry the weight of sacrifice, perseverance and unwavering hope. His journey is one marked not only by challenges, but by a deep commitment to building a better future for his family simply because he believed in more.
Victor arrived in the United States through the “Movilidad Segura” program carrying “dreams and goals, but above all, a strong desire to move forward.” After being reunited with his wife here in Texas, their new life began—but not without challenges.
New beginnings rarely come without challenges. For two years, Victor faced the uncertainty that many refugees experience as he searched for stable work and navigated the difficulties of a language barrier. “Things were difficult at first because I couldn’t find a job, and the language was a barrier that wasn’t in my favor,” he explains. Even so, he refused to give up
He visited staffing agencies, submitted his resume and kept searching for opportunities. Eventually, he found work at Walmart, where he was welcomed with kindness and given a place to start. It was there, four months into his job, that a simple request from his son would change everything.
Victor’s son asked if his dad could take him to school—not by car, but on a school bus. That moment sparked something in him that would reshape Victor’s future. “That’s where the idea of getting my commercial Class B license was born,” Victor shares.
Moving Forward
Determined to make it happen, Victor set his sights on earning that license. Along the way, he received support from people who believed in him—including Ms. Katy, whose virtual English classes at World Relief became a critical part of his journey. Though Victor initially hesitated, preferring in-person learning, he pressed on. “Day by day, I tried to interpret what they were saying… it was a constant struggle full of questions,” he recalls. Despite the challenges to learn English his “determination remained strong” and he worked to understand and interpret lessons in English. But his determination never wavered.
While taking classes, Victor also pursued opportunities with Aubrey ISD. With encouragement, he took a leap of faith and applied—saying “yes” to the opportunity even before fully knowing what it would require.
Training was intense. Study guides in English pushed him to his limits, and there were moments of doubt. But Victor leaned on what he had learned through his English classes and kept moving forward. When he passed his written exams, he felt a sense of accomplishment—only to discover one final hurdle remained between him and a new beginning: the bus inspection.
“That’s when everything I learned came into play,” he says. Victor rose to the challenge. He carefully described each part of the bus—from the roof to the tires, from front to back—demonstrating not just knowledge, but the perseverance that carried him there. “It wasn’t easy,” Victor reflects. “Your mind plays tricks on you and makes you want to give up… but my determination never wavered.” And that determination he had paid off.
“Thanks to that effort… I was able to achieve what I longed for: a better job, a better future, and the well-being of my family.”
Today, Victor proudly holds his commercial Class B license—a milestone that represents more than a credential. It represents stability, opportunity and a brighter future for his family.
