Creating a Space of Welcome: One Volunteer’s Journey with World Relief Texas

For one Austin-based volunteer, serving refugee families through World Relief Texas isn’t just about giving—it’s about growth, connection, and living out a calling rooted in faith.

A Calling to Welcome

Jessica began serving with World Relief after learning more about refugee resettlement from community members and neighbors. As a Christian, she felt a clear sense of purpose in stepping into this work. “We are called to welcome and serve the foreigner. Cross cultural relationships deepen my understanding of God and the world around us,” she says.

This belief became something she also shared with her children as they joined her in volunteering. “If we were in a new country and new environment, we would want someone to welcome us. So by extending that hand of welcome, we are treating others as we wish to be treated.”

Creating Community Through Conversation and Crafts

Her main role at World Relief is helping to facilitate Conversations and Crafts, a gathering space where women—many of them newly resettled—can come together for basic English practice, creative expression, and, most importantly, connection.

It’s a simple but powerful space. Women from diverse backgrounds gather in their apartment complex to talk, create, and support one another. “These experiences hopefully enhance their quality of life and help them feel fulfilled and hopeful,” she says.

Growth Through Service

One of the most fulfilling parts of volunteering, she shares, is the intentional act of stepping outside her usual routine. “My life can be consumed with me and my family and my friends,” she says. “But remembering the greater story of the Human Experience is humbling.”

Volunteering has expanded her view of the world—and her heart. “I’ve been impacted by the kind generosity of the ladies. Their warm smiles and consistent hugs bring so much joy.”

One story in particular stays with her:

A woman who shows up to Conversations and Crafts faithfully, even while battling depression. “Knowing that community sparks hope and joy makes it a blessing to be a part of.”

A Word of Encouragement

For anyone considering volunteering, Jessica offers a gentle but powerful invitation: “Creating a space of welcome and love is earth-changing. One small step, outside of yourself, can begin a journey you never imagined.” If you are interested in stepping into a volunteer role at World Relief Texas, check out what opportunities are currently available on our website.
