Finding Safety and Hope in Austin

In a world fraught with conflict and danger, one family’s journey from Afghanistan to Austin stands as a powerful testament to resilience and new beginnings.

From the Fields to the Front Lines

Before the tumultuous shift that would reshape their lives, this family lived a simple life in Afghanistan. The father, who once toiled as a farmer, found his world transformed when he joined the US military in 2012. For nearly a decade, he served alongside American forces, navigating an increasingly perilous environment. Ultimately, he remembers life to have been challenging.

Fleeing a Perilous Situation

For this family, the stakes were high. Since the father worked with the US military this made their entire family a prime target for the Taliban. Their safety in Afghanistan was eventually no longer guaranteed. “We had to flee so they wouldn’t kill us,” he explains. “We were not safe in Afghanistan.” As a result, fleeing became the only viable option to protect themselves.

A New Beginning in the US

On May 22, 2024, the family arrived in the United States. As soon as they stepped off the plane, they entered into a new chapter of their lives. This day was filled with “lovely memories.” This transition was filled with relief and profound joy. “All the stress and depression went away as we were now safe,” he says. “We were happy about bringing our kids here and their exposure to good education and advancing their careers.” This was a “huge relief” to come off their shoulders knowing they were safe.

Support from World Relief Texas

The family’s arrival in Austin was met with critical support from World Relief Texas. Our first Good Neighbor Team (GNT) in Austin played a pivotal role in smoothing their transition. Upon arrival, the family was met at the airport and taken to a hotel. The GNT provided essential supplies, financial assistance, and guided them through the complexities of food stamp and Medicaid applications.

The GNT’s support extended beyond initial necessities. “World Relief has supported us very much and made moving here an easier transition” the father exclaims. The GNT accompanied the family to appointments, conducted home visits to ensure their well-being, and assisted in taking the children to school. “We appreciate their support very much,” the father reflects.

A Brighter Future

Life in Austin has brought significant changes since moving. The family is now enjoying a sense of stability and security that was previously out of reach. The children are thriving in their new educational environment, and the family is benefiting from the improved facilities and support available to them. “We are very happy now and the depression and fear we once felt has now been lifted” the father notes. The family is very happy and hopeful with their new life in Austin.

This family’s story is a reminder of the challenges faced by many displaced by conflict and the profound impact of compassionate support in helping them rebuild their lives. Through their journey, they have not only found safety, but also a renewed sense of hope and opportunity in their new home.
