Economic empowerment through employment services helps refugee families build stability, independence, and self-sufficiency. For one refugee and her family, coming to the United States meant the hope of safety, stability, and a new beginning.
After fleeing violence in Guatemala, Matilda arrived in the United States determined to build a more secure future for her family. But starting over in a new country brought challenges she had never faced before. Matilda did not know how to read or write and did not speak English, making it difficult to navigate the job market, understand job postings, and complete online applications.
Despite these barriers, Matilda remained determined to find work and provide for her children.
Finding a Path to Employment
Through World Relief’s Employment Program, Matilda began working closely with her caseworker toward her goal of finding employment.
Together, they created a resume, identified opportunities that matched Matilda’s abilities and goals, and worked through job applications. Because reading job postings and navigating online applications were significant barriers, her caseworker walked alongside her through each step of the process.
With support, encouragement, and persistence, Matilda continued applying for opportunities.
Eventually, she and her caseworker identified a position that could be a good fit. Together, they completed the application process, and Matilda received a job offer.
For Matilda, finding employment was about more than earning a paycheck. It was an opportunity to begin building the stability and independence she had hoped for when she came to the United States.
Employment That Makes a Difference
Today, Matilda is working and helping provide for her children. Having an income means she can contribute to her family’s everyday needs and give her children opportunities that were once out of reach.
Reflecting on what employment has meant for her family, Matilda shared:
“I feel happy because now I can cover some of our expenses. Before, when my children asked me for something, there was no money. Now I have a little money and can provide for them.”
Matilda’s story illustrates the power of economic empowerment. When our refugee neighbors have access to employment opportunities and the support needed to navigate the job market, they can take meaningful steps toward self-sufficiency.
