Volunteer Opportunity: Apartment Set-up
Position Summary:
World Relief Memphis Initial Welcome Services (IWS) sets up each new client’s home or apartment before the client arrives in Memphis. Apartment Set-Up Volunteers will assist IWS in this task. A Home Set-Up Checklist will be provided, and volunteers should complete the tasks on the checklist. Each Apartment Set-Up opportunity may include
- Moving furniture
- Assembling furniture
- Making beds, hanging shower curtains, and other similar duties as asked
- Stocking kitchens with food and cooking necessities
The goal is for a client’s home or apartment to be fully set up by the time the client arrives at MEM.
Key Responsibilities:
- Moving and assembling furniture and household items
- Organizing kitchens, bathrooms, etc.
- Stocking the pantry with WR-provided food.
- Making the space feel welcoming for the family/individual arriving.
- Log volunteer hours in the WR Portal.
Qualifications:
- 18+ years old, unless parent or guardian accompanies the minor during the opportunity.
- Must be dependable and flexible.
- Ability to lift and move heavy items is preferred. If a volunteer is unable to do that, the volunteer should communicate that to the Volunteer Coordinator in advance.
Time Commitment: Setup takes 1.5-3 hrs., depending on the family size, apartment setup team size, and apartment size.
Duration: Ongoing, committing as your schedule allows.

Onboarding and Training:
- General short-term/long-term volunteer application
- Criminal background check, reference check, and motor vehicle check
- Training includes the standard WR volunteer virtual training and assisting a WRM staff member or seasoned volunteer with an apartment setup.
Management and Communication:
Apartment Set-Up Volunteers will be collaboratively managed. Church and Community Engagement (CCE) will recruit and onboard Apartment Set-Up Volunteers. Initial Welcome Services (IWS) will communicate directly about upcoming opportunities through the Basecamp app and coordinate set-up details with volunteers who respond to a request. CCE will do quarterly check-ins with volunteers who have participated in a set-up to receive feedback about their experience. CCE and IWS will do quarterly check-ins to communicate the status and need for onboarding new volunteers and communicate feedback from current Apartment Set-Up Volunteers.
Feedback Loop:
After each Apartment Set-Up Volunteer’s first and second set-up opportunities, CCE will ask the volunteer and IWS for feedback. CCE will do quarterly check-ins with volunteers who have participated in a set-up to receive feedback about their experience. CCE and IWS will do quarterly check-ins to communicate the status and need for onboarding new volunteers and communicate feedback from current Apartment Set-Up Volunteers. IWS will recommend to CCE whether a volunteer should be recommended for another Apartment Set-Up opportunity, or if the placement was not a good fit.
