
Volunteer Opportunity: ESL Conversation Partner
Position Summary:
ESL Conversation Partner volunteers support English language learners by providing consistent conversation practice and mentorship. Volunteers are matched with one or more participants and help build fluency, comprehension, and confidence in English through regular, structured interactions based on the client’s Burlington English coursework. This role is designed to foster a positive learning environment and meaningful connection between volunteers and participants.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct Practice Sessions: Meet with clients in person or virtually to review and practice lessons using Burlington English. Tailor sessions based on their current studies and simulate real-life scenarios (e.g., ordering food, shopping, navigating forms).
- Provide Constructive Feedback: Offer encouraging and actionable feedback to improve fluency and comprehension. Identify growth areas and suggest additional resources for independent learning.
- Create a Positive Environment: Foster a judgment-free, motivating space for clients to practice speaking and build confidence.
- Track Progress: Maintain regular updates on client progress, share feedback, and report any challenges or support needs to the program coordinator.
- Collaborate with Staff: Share insights on program effectiveness and suggest potential improvements.
Qualifications:
- 18+ years old.
- Complete the World Relief volunteer onboarding process (application, online workshop, background check).
- Availability for at least 4 hours per month, in-person or remote.
- Willingness to become familiar with the Burlington English platform.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patience, empathy, and commitment to supporting adult learners.
- Cultural sensitivity and a respectful, inclusive attitude.
Time Commitment:
- Minimum 3–6-month commitment.
- Flexible: approximately 4 hours per month.
- Sessions can be weekly or bi-weekly; format (virtual/in-person) depends on volunteer and participant availability.
