Displacement

Samandar's Journey

Did you know?

Afghanistan has a long history of displacement, with millions of Afghans internally displaced or seeking refuge abroad due to conflict, persecution, and insecurity. Decades of conflict and instability in Afghanistan began with the Soviet invasion of the country in 1979. Millions of Afghans left their homes to avoid the brutality, persecution, and violations of human rights carried out by the Soviet Union and its allies in Afghanistan. Numerous people fled to nearby nations, especially Pakistan and Iran. Many events led to the present displacement, an event such as After the Soviet troops in 1989, Afghanistan got into a civil war characterized by factional fighting among various mujahideen groups. Afghanistan saw a brief period of peace following the Taliban's ascension to power in the mid-1990s, but it also saw a surge in restrictions and violations of human rights, particularly against women and ethnic minorities. Also, after the 9/11 attacks, the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 sought to topple the Taliban government and destroy Al-Qaeda networks. Afghanistan continues to face immense humanitarian challenges, including widespread poverty, food insecurity, and lack of access to education and healthcare. It resulted in more than 8 million Afghans having to flee their homes and country. Within their nation, at least 3.2 million Afghans are internally displaced.
