Anna & Zamda's Journey
Did you know?
Democratic Republic of Congo has a very complex history of political and economic issues, and ethnic groups, and due to decades of conflicts between internal armed groups and external groups along with its human violations, it has led over 6 million to be displaced and over a million of them having to travel across Africa to seek refuge and asylum. Back in the early 1900s, DRC was colonized by Belgium which then took advantage of the land's natural resources and Congo did not get its independence back until the 1960s. Shortly after their independence, they struggled and were faced with turmoil. The country then plunges into a civil war and this instability and conflict paved the way for decades of violence and instability in the region. After about 20 years Congo began its first war against a rebel group, the second war then followed right between the years 1998-2003. The wars resulted in millions of deaths and displacement. Although the Congo War ended, The Democratic Republic of the Congo continued to suffer various armed conflicts and internal turmoil. As we’re speaking DRC is currently facing a humanitarian crisis right now.
