Navigating the healthcare system can feel overwhelming. More than once, I’ve stood in front of a huge sign in a medical complex looking over a long list of names and suite numbers trying to find the right office. Sadly, it’s not just medical facilities that feel like an enormous maze, it’s the healthcare and insurance systems too!
Imagine what it’s like for refugees and other immigrants who have recently arrived in America. The location is unfamiliar, the language unknown, but the needs are just as important and urgent. Imagine the sense of feeling overwhelmed, stressed, confused, and isolated in this situation. At World Relief, we recognize the importance of offering immigrant families personalized and empathetic support as they navigate the challenges of the U.S. healthcare system. We are committed to making sure these families are…
Not alone.
Mercy Ngoran, one of our Health and Wellness program staff at World Relief Triad, understands these challenges and walks alongside families as they overcome obstacles within the healthcare system.
We provide personalized support and ensure that everyone receives the resources and guidance needed to receive appropriate care. From finding the right doctor and making an appointment to filling a prescription, Mercy teaches refugee families about the complicated healthcare system.
There are multiple roles to learn in order to navigate a check-up successfully.
Who makes the appointments? Who measures weight and blood pressure? When can a person see the doctor? How are payments made? In addition to these questions, there are often complex medical words, complicated insurance policies, and multiple appointments to juggle. Through every step, Mercy and the Health and Wellness team are there.
With a compassionate approach and tireless efforts, Mercy helps each person become self-sufficient and independent so they can navigate the healthcare system on their own. Mercy empowers immigrants to build a sustainable future in the Piedmont Triad. And who knows, maybe one day the people she has walked beside will stand in front of one of those medical office signs and help someone else find their way.
The Health and Wellness program at World Relief Triad exists to serve refugees with unique vulnerabilities or significant needs that require special attention. We care for those with intensive medical conditions, women at risk, minors, the elderly, and survivors of trafficking.
