Building a Future Through English: Igor’s Story

Igor and his wife arrived in the U.S. two years and five months ago, seeking safety and stability after fleeing the war in Ukraine. Back home, Igor had built a successful career—first as a mechanic, then as an IT specialist, and eventually as a department director at a metallurgical plant. Now, in the U.S., he is rebuilding his life, and learning English is a critical step toward his future.

The Devastation of War

Igor and his wife lived in a city now occupied by Russia, a city devastated by war. “The Russian soldiers destroyed many, many houses, buildings, schools, and hospitals in my town,” he shared. “They killed many people. They continue to kill Ukrainian people every day.”

While their hearts remain in Ukraine, Igor and his wife are determined to move forward in their new country. “I hope with the support of Europe and the U.S.—places that fight for democracy—we can win the war,” he said.

The Urgent Need to Learn English

For Igor and other Ukrainians, adjusting to life in the U.S. has not been easy, especially without strong English skills. “Without English, we can only work the hardest jobs,” Igor explained. He described working twelve-hour night shifts in a factory last summer and trying DoorDash delivery, but the low income made it difficult to get by.

Beyond employment, language barriers affect nearly every aspect of daily life. “We can’t talk to the bank or the Department of Human Services or doctors,” Igor said. “If you can’t communicate accurately with a doctor, it can make big problems for your health.”

Despite these challenges, Igor remains focused on his goals. “Every day, we say thank you to America and to God for helping us. It’s a great and beautiful country,” he shared.

For Igor, learning English is not just about survival in the U.S.—it’s about the future. He hopes to one day return to Ukraine and contribute to rebuilding his homeland. “I’m sure many companies from all over the world will come to help with construction and re-building,” he said. “I have experience working with a European engineering company, and they all spoke English. So if I go back, English will be important for my work.”

The Impact of Free English Classes

For Igor and his wife, English classes at World Relief Chicagoland have been vital. “We don’t have enough money for paid English classes,” he said. “The World Relief classes are free, and this is a big help.”

In 2024 alone, nearly 1,400 people like Igor have been able to learn English through World Relief Chicagoland’s programs. These classes equip new neighbors with the language skills they need to navigate daily life, secure better jobs, and build a future for their families.
