Good Neighbor Team

Even before the refugee family arrives, their Good Neighbor Team can gather the Welcome Kits and furnishings a family will need to begin their new lives in the United States. A full list of necessary items is provided. In most cases, members of the Good Neighbor Team are present from the first moment the refugee family arrives at the airport, offering a greeting that conveys they are welcome in their new community. 

In the first weeks and months in the United States, refugees have many appointments, orientations, and new things to learn. Teams partner with World Relief to assist with practical resettlement tasks. Assisting in these tasks helps empower the family to move towards self-sufficiency, while also providing a sense of community and support as they adjust to life in Sacramento. 

Good Neighbor Teams best honor refugees when they come with hands that are both ready to serve and open to receive. The Good Neighbor Team commits to at least one member visiting the refugee family on a weekly basis. Our ultimate vision is to see the team and the family come into long-lasting friendship. 

World Relief provides each Good Neighbor Team (GNT) with the following support: 

• GNT Orientation tailored to your team offered at the World Relief Sacramento (WRS) office or local church/community center.
• GNT First Visit facilitated by a Translator who speaks the family’s native language.
• Resources, including e-learning courses to help equip and guide you during the entire length of this process.
• Background information on the culture of the newly arrived family
• A WRS GNT Volunteer Coordinator to support and guide you along the way
• 3—month debrief with the GNT
• 6—month in person closure meeting with the GNT
• Although the GNT experience is 6 months, our hope is that volunteers would remain in friendship with the family beyond a volunteer experience. Although we will no longer “check-In” with the team after the 6 month volunteer commitment, we welcome and encourage volunteers to stay connected with World Relief and your Volunteer Coordinator.
