Critical funding for refugees and families in need is gone. Families in crisis need your support.

What’s next for Mahasen

Thanks to the generosity of people like you, we’re bridging the gap, continuing to provide Mahasen with the basic, life-saving essentials that are typically provided through the U.S. Refugee Resettlement program. While we pray for the restoration of the Refugee Resettlement Program, the reality remains: thousands of refugees like Mahasen are already in the U.S. with no guaranteed financial support for their first 90 days — leaving them without the resources they need for rent, food, clothing, transportation, and other critical essentials.

We refuse to turn our backs on them. We will continue to serve them, but we cannot do it alone.

Will you stand in the gap with us?

What happened to Mahasen and refugees like her

On January 24, 2025, World Relief received an urgent directive from our longtime governmental partner, the U.S. Department of State, to immediately “stop all work” under the grant agreement that provides initial resettlement support for nearly 4000 newly arrived refugees that World Relief is serving. This abrupt decision has left a critical funding gap for the first 90 days of the resettlement of refugees like Mahasen and her toddler, jeopardizing their access to housing, food and essential services during their most vulnerable months in the U.S.

While the government usually funds the basic needs and essential services, private donors and volunteers play a vital role in creating welcoming communities that help refugees build a thriving future.

What’s happening to people in vulnerable situations around the world

Early on January 25, 2025 we received a similar notice impacting life-saving international programs that World Relief implements in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The USAID “stop work” orders abruptly halted funding for much of our active programs in Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Haiti — putting millions of lives at risk.

World Relief now faces an $8 million critical funding gap that must be filled in the next month. These abrupt decisions are leaving lives in crisis — and we cannot — we will not — leave their side.
