Advocate for Due Process for Asylum Seekers
Many individuals and families have fled their homelands due to persecution, violence, or extreme poverty to seek refuge in the United States. Their journeys are marked by risk and desperation; but also hope for safety and security. However, upon reaching the border, they encounter a complex and backlogged immigration system.
Right now, arrivals at the southern border have effectively been suspended by the current administration, yet those already here continue to wait in limbo for their asylum cases to be heard, underscoring the need for due process.
While U.S. law allows those with credible asylum claims to remain in the country while their cases are processed, delays often stretch for months or years. A shortage of immigration judges, limited resources and complex legal procedures have created significant barriers to timely and fair adjudication.
As people of faith, we are called to seek justice, extend compassion, and uphold the dignity of every person – especially the vulnerable.
Both Congress and the administration have critical roles in shaping our nation’s border policies. While our laws rightly uphold secure borders, they also provide protection for those fleeing credible threats to their lives. Let your Representative and Senators know that you support restoring justice and dignity to the asylum process. Urge them to uphold due process and ensure that families seeking safety are not met with indefinite delays or unnecessary harm.
