(Baltimore, MD) September 2, 2025 – Over the weekend, natural disasters devastated two of the most fragile countries in the world, Afghanistan and Sudan, killing thousands and injuring and displacing many, many more. World Relief is actively responding to both crises and encourages Americans to join us in responding with compassion.

Late on Saturday evening, a 6.0 magnitude hit eastern Afghanistan, devastating communities and leaving at least 1,400 people dead. Thousands more are injured or displaced. In a context where foreign assistance to the country has been significantly diminished in recent months, many are in need of basic humanitarian support simply to survive. World Relief is responding through a longstanding and trusted partner organization already on the ground in Afghanistan.

Then on Sunday, heavy rains triggered a landslide in Darfur, a part of Sudan that has already been devastated by an ongoing civil war that has displaced millions. At least 300 and as many as 1,000 individuals are estimated to have lost their lives as a direct result of the landslide. World Relief has a longtime presence in Sudan, where we have operated since 2004, and is immediately beginning a humanitarian disaster response in Darfur, where we have some of our largest operations.

“These two countries, Afghanistan and Sudan, were already facing profound humanitarian crises. These natural disasters have now exacerbated human suffering. We invite all of those who are able to contribute to ensure that we can reach as many of those in need as possible with lifesaving support,” said Gemta Adula, World Relief’s Regional Director of International Programs and former Country Director for Sudan.

As in all disasters, the first 48 hours are often the most critical time to ensure life-saving relief can reach families in their most dire moment of need. World Relief’s monthly giving community, The Path, ensures we’re able to move into action at a moment’s notice, whether directly or through implementing partners. Those who wish to join this generous group of donors can do so on the World Relief website. Alternatively, we have set up designated funds for our specific responses to these concurrent disasters here:

“We’re devastated by the loss of life in these countries that have already suffered so profoundly,” said Myal Greene, president & CEO of World Relief. “But we’re also committed to responding boldly, in partnership with local churches and others who give generously, to provide food, shelter and other humanitarian support to as many survivors of these crises as possible, rooted in our belief that each human life is precious to God and worth preserving.”
