While playing outside one day, sisters Olivia and Ruby see something in the sky. Something that shouldn’t be there—a boy! A mysterious boy who lives alone in the clouds. Who doesn’t remember where he came from or how he got there. And who could really use a friend.
—The Boy in the Clouds
A love of adventure, travel and story-telling inspired Refugee Programs Director James Rashid to begin writing and publishing books for children and young adults.
“It’s a creative outlet and something I really enjoy,” he said. “My love of traveling is reflected in the books. I like to go exploring with my family off the beaten path. My stories are written to foster curiosity in children.”
James first began writing a young adult fantasy series when he was teaching English in Thailand in 2014 and 2015. The books include a big adventure, a rescue mission, a magical world and incorporate multicultural characters and themes.
His creative process involves writing in the evenings following an outline so he can envision where the storyline is headed.
Over time as James worked on The Keepers Trilogy, he learned the ropes of editing and publishing. The books came out in 2020 and 2021.
James is most proud of The Boy in the Clouds, his April 2024 children’s fantasy book written for 8 to 10- year-olds. “This book was very special because it was inspired by my two girls and dealt with the impact of friendship and handling strong emotions.”
All of the books also include another family connection as James’ brother creates the cover art.
At World Relief Wisconsin, James oversees direct client services staff and ensures implementation of grant programs. He has led community discussions on interculturalism and presented to community partners to help professionals provide culturally relevant and effective service to newcomers. James has a bachelor’s degree in international studies and economics from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
